Pacify Me

Posted in Weight Management, Stress Management

Inspyre You Health Pacify MeToday has been one of those days that I wish I could get back in the bed and start over. Before 11:30 a.m. I had a series of events that made me want to scream! I actually didn't scream but I did have one of those good ol' hearty cries that leave you hiccupping when finished.

I remember a time, not that long ago, in which food would have been my comfort. It would start off with a visit to the snack machine or nearest gas station to buy some candy to hold me over until I got off work. Once my day finished, I would be sure to stop by the grocery store and buy an assortment of chips, key lime pie (single serving of course), and more than likely some more candy. I would then rent a movie and make my way home for a night curled up on the couch, food in hand and drown myself in my sorrows.

Energy Quick Fix

Cravings for sugar or refined carbohydrates can happen when our body needs an energy fix. Our body can extract energy from sugar very quickly, and is therefore the "food of choice" when a quick fix is needed.

To avoid the need for an energy quick fix, eat for sustained energy. Eat meals that are low in glycemic load – whole unprocessed foods such as whole grains, vegetables, and beans are great choices. They are high in fiber, which moderates the speed at which the sugar is absorbed by the body. Also, make sure you include a moderate amount of good fat and lean protein to slow down stomach emptying and increase satiety.

Root Cause of Sugar Cravings

In Curb Cravings 'What's Wrong with Sugar' I talked about what sugar was and how it negatively affects our bodies. When I first cut back on my sugar intake (which I never thought would be possible), I remember how all of a sudden I was sleeping better, my PMS wasn't nearly as bad, I had more energy and the list goes on and on. As time progressed, overall I just felt better!

When it comes to sugar, it is not simply that we don't have the willpower or discipline to control our cravings – there are some deeper, physiological and biological reasons behind our urge.

What's Really Wrong with Sugar?

Sugar used to be my crack! I literally would wake up eating it and wouldn't stop until I went to bed at night. Now I refer to sugar as my crack in a light manner but in all actuality, sugar really is a drug. Over the next few weeks in my Curb Cravings blog series I will identify exactly what sugar is, explain why it is an addictive substance, root causes of sugar cravings and ways to help reduce them. So let's begin....
